Not only did Silent Hill present an interesting take on survival horror, but also popularized the psychological horror genre that would see a sudden surge in the late 90s and early 2000s. Little did Konami know they were making history themselves in the process.Ĭreated by Keiichiro Toyama and the newly formed Team Silent, Silent Hill debuted in 1999 on PlayStation to heaps of critical success. Of course, what would a popular series be without some healthy competition? Seeing the success of Resident Evil, Konami would task a little team of outcasts in the headquarters with making a horror game to rival Capcom's flagship IP. This would kick off a multi-million dollar franchise and change the horror genre in gaming forever, constantly reinventing the rules. In 1996, Capcom released a revolutionary survival horror game, titled Resident Evil (or Biohazard in Japan).
